On October 23rd, several politicians visited CMS to discuss current issues and the functioning of the government of the United States of America. The people in attendance were Representative Jim Himes (House of Representatives), Senator Ceci Maher (State Senator), and Representative Jonathan Steinberg (Connecticut State Representative). Their different backgrounds and responsibilities within the government helped students understand what takes place at each level – National, State, and Town.
This visit follows the 8th grade Social Studies unit on the Constitution and the United States government. Students had the opportunity to ask questions to the politicians ranging from “Is TikTok a national security issue?”, “Have you ever had a private meeting with the President or any other famous people?”, to local questions surrounding the traffic in Fairfield County. In addition, it was interesting and inspiring to understand how each of them became interested in assuming a public service role and the challenges they faced along the way.
This meeting served as an ideal closing point for the Social Studies unit, enabling students to relate the theoretical concepts that they learned in class to their practical application in real life. We are extremely grateful to the politicians for taking the time to visit CMS and for sharing their insights with our 8th graders.
