Memorial Day is a break from school, and usually it lands on a Monday. Although this seems very very fun that you could stay home and grind Fortnite or something like that, it actually means a lot more. Memorial Day is a holiday meant to honor the deceased people who served in the military. CMS Colt dives into the facts.
Memorial Day is considered by many to be the unofficial start of summer; however, its true significance is that it honors the men and women who lost their lives serving in the U.S. Army Corps. This includes the U.S Coast Guard, The U.S Air Force, The Marine Corps and the Navy. By 1890, all of the states accepted Memorial Day as a national holiday. This means that all of the states decorated people’s graves nationwide.the United States has recognized this holiday since 1890, although it was called Decoration Day until 1971.
On May 30, 1968 John Logan, a former civil war general, began a new symbolic gesture when walked with close to 5,000 people to the Arlington National Cemetery to pay respects to those who fought for our countries. Participants placed flags, flowers, and decorative rocks on the graves of around 20,000 people. This was to honor and celebrate how hard the people worked to fight for our country. Since 2000, at 3:00 PM every Memorial Day, Americans are urged to take a moment of silence. This also pays respect for the fallen soldiers that fought so bravely to make our country what it is now. This Memorial Day, consider a moment of silence and reflection to honor our brave and selfless military.
