Sometimes I find myself wondering: why is the Premier League so popular in the U.S.? Last summer, I tried to get tickets for a Premier League match in Philadelphia—and they were nearly sold out. So, what’s driving this huge interest?
Let’s talk about the main reason many Americans prefer the Premier League over Major League Soccer (MLS): the quality and fame of the players. The Premier League features top-tier talent and internationally recognized teams. It also runs pre-season tours and summer mini-series matches in the U.S., keeping fans engaged year-round. Inter CT F.C soccer player and Coleytown Middle School student Daris Sahmanovic attributes the teams popularity to its worldwide reach and new contracts every season.
“It’s the biggest soccer league in the world and popular in every country,” Sahmanovic said. “I think the fan base will increase because there’s an interesting signing every season.”
In contrast, MLS has limited global star power—aside from a few exceptions, like Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, whose jersey is one of the few MLS kits I regularly see around.
Another major reason for the Premier League’s popularity is the anticipation surrounding their U.S. matches. Traveling to the UK to watch a match in person is expensive. You need a plane ticket, hotel accommodations, and of course, a match ticket. The flight alone takes about seven hours—I’ve done it myself. So when Premier League teams visit the U.S., fans jump at the chance to see their favorite clubs without having to leave the country.
But that’s only part of the story.
The last major factor is the growing Premier League community in the U.S.. Events like the Premier League Fan Fest—which was held this year in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sep. 20 and 21—are a huge draw. Fan Fest is a live, festival-style experience inspired by “Premier League Mornings”, the NBC show many fans wake up early to watch. If you know the show, you’ve probably heard the iconic intro: “This is the Premier League on NBC!”
Overall, the Premier League has a lot of different reasons to having a large fan base. And this fan base will only keep growing because so many are getting their spark of inspiration from soccer, just like me!
Of course, there are many other reasons for the Premier League’s popularity—but these are some of the most important.
