The popular movie/feature, K-Pop Demon Hunters has completely taken over America. With its catchy playlists and hundreds of millions of views on the streaming service, Netflix, it has blown up. After hearing it all over the school community, we have decided to start our own little investigation on what this is all about, and here are the facts.
Airing on Netflix in June, it has received approximately 325.1 million views. This feature made a grand total of $19 million, breaking records from across the globe in views. The characters created for the show are actually closely related to actual K-Pop singers. They come from inspiration based on their works, songs, performances, and even just general knowledge. The demons that appear in the show are based on Korean Folklore which dates back thousands of years. Sometimes, the directors want to have some fun. Viewers have noticed a few easter eggs peppered throughout the shows. Some of the songs from the movie are based on real K-Pop songs. This provides a little bit of deja-vu throughout the show. Not a well known fact, the director of K-Pop Demon Hunters, Maggie Kang, voiced a few of the background characters. Next time, try listening for her voice throughout the show, especially within the minor characters.
One of the most famous lines from the song “Golden,” “I’m done hiding, now I’m shining like I’m born to be” has a special meaning to it. The characters, especially Rumi, are no longer hiding their true selves, and are ready to show the world who HUNTR/X actually is. They are ready to fight back and hunt the demons before something bad happens. Incidentally, Rumi was going to be a character for a different show called, Plastic Walrus, but the director of the show loved her so much that she decided to make her the main character for K-Pop Demon Hunters. The film uses symbols from Korean culture to try to project deeper meanings into the viewer. For example, ‘Noriage’ pendents worn by the Huntress members are actually artifacts from ancient Korea.
From the Easter eggs to the catchy songs, Folklore and endearing characters, it has certainly become one of the most popular shows on the planet from “My Little Soda Pop” to “I’m done hiding, now I’m shining like I’m born to be,” this movie will forever have a place among the stars and will forever be known as one of the most popular productions of all time.
